Chinese WOTD – 谦虚

谦虚 → Qiān Xū → Modest (humble)

Boorish behaviour is never a good sight, but it seems to be more so when you are in China. While this isn’t my first-hand experience, I can relate to some other accounts I have heard about how polite the Chinese can be towards Westerners. From preferential treatment at certain medical institutions, to special occupations you can obtain by simply having a European or American passport. With that said, I would say that in my opinion there is room to be more appropriate and less overconfident for some. Being humble isn’t just about playing nice with roommates/classmates, it’s also about interacting in a friendly manner when necessary to locals.
